About Karaoke at the PAC

We love Karaoke!  Music has a way of bringing us together like nothing else!  At the PAC, it is one of our most popular programs.  When coming out for Karaoke, there’s a few things you should know.  We’ve put this together to help!

About the songs:

Where’s the song list?

You can find our song list on our website, either as a PDF downloadable file, or on our blogger page as an alphabetically sorted list.  You can find the list here. 

I can’t find my favorite song. 

We have over 250,000 licensed songs collected over several years.  We update the database monthly with popular requests.  When you fill out a song slip, we use that slip to locate your song in our database.  If the song isn’t found, the slip is saved and we will try to find it for you during our next update.  If you don’t see a song you want to sing, there could be a few reasons for that.  

First, the song doesn’t exist in Karaoke format.  Newer songs and less popular songs aren’t always available for Karaoke.  If we let you know that it doesn’t exist, wait a month before sending another request.  It can take several months for newer songs to come out with Karaoke versions.

Second, we haven’t updated our database yet for the month. Keep putting in requests; if we can’t get the song for you, we’ll let you know.

And third, to submit a request for a song, use the Karaoke slips provided.  This is the only way we have to keep track of requested songs. 

My song contains expletive content, will you still play it? 

It is rare that we won’t play a song, however, there may be times that we won’t because it is either offensive in nature or contains a significant amount of negative language.  The PAC is mostly PG rated; songs will slip in that have foul language, however, we try to avoid it as much as possible.  

The song is to high/low slow/fast for me to sing!  Can you do anything?

Sure.  We can adjust the key that the song is played in, and we can also speed up and slow down the song. If you know beforehand that you need adjustments made, please indicate that on the Karaoke slip.  

Do you take song requests?

Sure, you may use your spot in rotation to hear a song played.  

Can I suggest a singalong song?

Of course! We have a set criteria for singalong songs; they must be of average length, must be well known, and must be easy to sing along with.  If we feel that a song would qualify, it will be put on the singalong list.  

What about the background music? 

Background music is always DJ’s choice. It is determined by the expected crowd, and may be changed to suit the majority.  For instance, if the majority of karaoke songs are country, a pop music background playlist may be changed to a country playlist.  

Karaoke Procedures:

How do I use the request slips?

You can submit as many request slips as you would like at once.  Many times, submitting several slips at once will help the DJ move through rotation quicker.  Only submit songs that you want to sing; it is up to the DJ to determine the order of the songs.  Generally, the top song on the stack will be the first song you sing.

You may also use the request slips to ask questions.  The DJ will check the back of the slip as well.  Considering most questions are if we have a certain song, these can easily be asked on the slip. 

Do NOT use any other form than the request slips.  

What about saved playlists?

For all singers, we create a playlist folder that stores your songs.  This is so that we can easily find your songs the next time you come in.  If you would like to be put in rotation and you already have a saved playlist, simply bring up a slip with your name on it.  When it is your turn to sing, you will be given the chance to select a song from your playlist.  Please note, on particularly busy nights, if you do  use your saved playlist, the DJ may select the song for you.  You may review and edit your playlist anytime outside of scheduled events, or before and following an event.

How do you determine the order of singers? 

We run on a rotation based method.  In other words, to be put in rotation, you fill out a slip with your name, song title, and song artist, and bring it to the DJ booth.  Once we receive that slip, your name will be put in the order it was received.  That rotation will be kept during the duration of the night. 

I think you skipped me.  What do I do?

When we run through the rotation, we will call each person’s name twice before moving on.  If we called your name and you were not present, you forfeit your turn.  If you are positive that your name was not called, let the DJ know and they will check the list and ensure that you are put in rotation. 

What happens at the end of rotation? 

The end of rotation is always DJ’s choice; the DJ can offer a sing-along song, can sing their own song, or they may simply play a song they would like to hear without anyone singing.  Once DJ’s choice is over, the DJ will return to the top of the rotation. 

How are duets or group songs handled? 

Duets or group singalongs not offered by the DJ (submitted by request slip) will be added in rotation under the first singers name listed on the slip.  At the next rotation, the singer will be able to sing their solo song, followed by the duet, then followed by the next in line.  On especially busy nights, duets will take the place of the singers solo song in order to provide everyone the opportunity to sing multiple times. 

DJ’s Rules:

These rules are meant to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that everyone has a great time.  Our biggest goal is to make sure that everyone is entertained and gets to sing in a timely manner with no major delays between songs.  We also want to ensure safety throughout.

Have your song ready. We try to move through rotation as quickly as possible to ensure that everyone gets the chance to sing. There may be times when you need to ask the DJ a question, but we request that it be kept brief. If it is about having a song, fill out the request slip.
Do not get on stage unless called, or requested by another singer. Please respect other singers. This is their time to shine; yours will come.
Do not hang out at the DJ booth for extended periods. The DJ’s job is not easy. When they are working the booth, they are monitoring sound levels for both the music and the singers. This is no different than at a live music venue; we want you to sound good, so this requires constant attention to the sound board. DJ’s also have to program each singer, enter songs, and adjust rotations. The DJ’s job is to make you sound good and to make sure that everyone is having a great time.
Do not touch the DJ’s computer, mixing board, or equipment other than the microphones. We use a professional sound setup that is used for both karaoke, DJ, and live music. One small mistake could halt the entire night, or at the least, cause delays.

General stuff about the venue

Lighting and effects: We use a variety of lighting and effects during Karaoke.  On Wednesdays, the setting is more subdued; we never use fog and keep the lighting minimal.  On Saturdays, we may have various lighting and fog effects going on.  These effects may change periodically. If you wish to visit on a Saturday and are not able to tolerate a lot of the special effect lighting, let us know beforehand and we may be able to help out. 

Profanity: We are a PG rated venue.  Excessive foul language or offensive topics is highly discouraged.  We know it will happen occasionally, but because we cater to all ages, including children, we try our best to keep things cleaned.  If someone is being too offensive, we will request that they tone things down.  If they refuse, they will be asked to leave. 

Bring the kids!  They may not want to sing, but we have a variety of activities for them while you sing.  From the STEM/Makerspace room filled with educational activities to escape rooms to play rooms, we’re sure they’ll find something exciting to do. If they do want to sing, we have a variety of songs that they can sing with, from children's classics (wheels on the bus, etc.) to Disney favorites. 

Have fun! We want everyone singing! Skill level, age, and tone deafness doesn’t matter as long as you are having fun doing what you do!  We ask that you offer encouragement to everyone who gets up on stage.  Feel free to clap, sway back and forth, and cheer with each singer.  

Private Karaoke/DJ Parties

Private Karaoke parties are generally handled the same way as regular karaoke events, however, it is up to the host (who rents the facility) if they want any changes.  At the time of scheduling an event, we will try to gather as much information as possible in order to make your event fun and successful.
